Flowers for “Vicki”(e)

DC woke up this morning with a “Happy Mother’s Day” for me. He then moved right in to asking what we are going to eat later.

I made the mistake of telling him that we would try to get Chili’s takeout (HIS favorite place) for dinner so that is all he is interested in.

He gave asking about dinner a break when we went for a porch visit with Grandma. He was excited to bring “Grandmother” a card and a gift for Mother’s Day and we spent a little time there.

All week he had been promising me a card for Mother’s Day. I was sure that since Doug always takes care of that for him while DC takes full credit, he was expecting a card to miraculously appear for him to present to me.

He has and still does draw flowers for me at random, but never for a holiday – on the holiday (well, there was that ONE time) unless someone tells him to do it. He does make things for me during some of his activities even though they are not supposed to be for me (see: Even when he gets the assignment wrong; he gets it right) , so I am not complaining at all.

When we arrived home, he started talking about “Chills” (DC-speak). Again, I told him that we would try. I didn’t know if it was even open for take out.

I mentioned the card he promised me.

DC: Grandmother

Me: Yes, you brought a card to Grandma, but where is the card you promised me?

DC: (pointing all over the house) Card.

Me: You said you would make me a card. Where is it?

DC: (gives me the blank stare; the only thing he inherited from his father)

Me: Mom would like a card for Mother’s Day.

DC: (Still staring, but I could see it begin to click in his head finally) Paper!

He moved his laptop back to make room for the paper.

I went in the other room, so it would be a surprise when he presented his card to me.

I could hear him talking to himself and reciting:

Violets are blue

Violets are blue

Roses are red

Flowers are yellow

He came in and presented me with the card above.

Flowers for Vickie (I added the “e” because no one, no one – ever spells my name correctly)

Apparently all the the reciting he was doing was just him prompting himself to get all of the colors right.

Yes of course I made a big deal of it all and yes, he was very proud of the card. We promptly hung it on the cabinet so we can see it all day.

I got my card.

I had to ask for it, but he understood without me directly saying “Please make a card”. He figured it out.

Now it is entirely possible when Doug comes to drop off the take-out later that he will have gotten a card for me from DC.

DC will take full credit for that one too.

He’s the best!!!!

Happy Mother’s Day!!!!

#SilentCoffee

Once again I am using my “Other Blog” format over here on this site. It’s Mother’s Day, so I can do what I want. Right?

Silent coffee. That is all I wanted today. I am sure we all have that dream. I tried. I really did, but as in all of these other attempts; I failed.

Facebook Status – June 2017

Silent Coffee on Vacation

Second attempt at 5 minutes of alone time. First attempt aborted when DC forced Doug to bring him to find me.

*******

Sleeping in and #SilentCoffee – March 2018

DC , on a regular basis feels the need to announce that he is  “Not tired yet” at different intervals during the evening. There have been times when Doug was over and I am just too tired to stay awake and since he was here finishing his laundry or doing something on the computer, I will tell DC, who just announced he was “Not tired yet” that he can stay up until Doug leaves.

Of course I know that Doug would not leave until DC was in bed and of course he would lock the doors on his way out.

Nope….. As soon as I say I am going to bed, even if he had just made his “Not tired yet” announcement, he begins packing up his princess papers, books and markers and goes up to his room.

If I am going to bed, he is going to bed.

If I am awake, he is going to be awake.

That is just the way it is.

I was already scheduled off from work today but due to the impending storm, I was almost 100% certain that I would be keeping DC home as well – whether his program was cancelled or not. I did not tell him last night just in case there was a drastic change in the forecast by the time morning came. Because I already knew that only one of us would possibly be getting ready for work this morning, I let him sleep about a half hour longer than usual (normally we are both up and dressed by the time we find everything is cancelled so there is no going back to bed – ever).

Unless everything is called off the night before, today may possibly be the very first time, ever that he hasn’t been up, showered and dressed before we found out that his work (or school, back in the day) was cancelled.

What you have to understand here is that every single time I have to get up during the night, every night (I am old, so me getting up during the night happens QUITE often), I have to first stop in his room to tell him that it is not time to get up yet and he needs to go back to sleep. He hears me, every.single.time and is ready to bound out of his bed, no matter what time it is.

This morning when I got up for good, I went into his room as always and said. “I am going downstairs now, if you want to sleep longer you can” – (This never works but still, I try)

I was shocked when he said “Okay” and rolled over to go back to sleep. I was thinking “Wow! I actually get to have silent coffee, this morning”.

I hardly finished making the coffee when I heard him yelling “Mom, want to get up!”

His face when he came downstairs made me laugh out loud!

He was angry with me because apparently he thinks I told him to stay in bed while I had the nerve to get up and come downstairs without him!

Silent Coffee, cancelled….

Mother’s Day – May 2018

Hiding in the Laundry room

It is Mother’s Day. In a desperate attempt to just have 5 minutes alone and silent coffee, I took my coffee down to the laundry room/garage.

I barely had time to put my cup down when I heard DC knocking on the door at the top of the stairs.

This was very odd indeed because trust me, he rarely knock on any door.

I yelled up the stairs.

“What’s wrong?”

DC: “What you doing?”

“I will be up in a minute”

Knocking continues.

DC: “I want a hug”

“I will be up in a minute.”

DC: “I want a hug”

(He did not mention wanting a hug when I was upstairs with him)

“Okay, I’m coming”

So #SilentCoffee was a failure once again, but I did get a hug and he did share his M&M’s from the M&M store yesterday with me, so I really can’t complain.

Happy Mother’s Day, everyone.

I wish you all  5 minutes of #SilentCoffee and if that did not/does not happen, I hope you get a big HUG (M&M’s are optional)

Happy Mother’s Day!

Even when he gets the assignment wrong, he gets it right.

DC always has written me little notes or drawn me pictures of hearts and flowers. Some of the time it happens when he thinks he might be in trouble for something but I do also get notes and flowers occasionally for no reason at all.

Lately, any time there is a craft or project to be done at one of his activities, I can always count on him making it all about me (and no, I am not there to influence him in his decision making).

For example, off the top of my head,  last year his summer camp celebrated their 50th anniversary. While waiting for lunch to be served, all of the campers were supposed to make birthday cards for the camp. DC made a birthday card for me (it wasn’t my birthday). Fortunately, I was there for the celebration, thanked him and had him make another for the camp.

At Christmastime, at his Best Buddies party, the assignment was to write a letter to Santa.

What DC ended up with is a cross between a love letter to me and a letter written as if he were Santa with a favorite random movie line thrown in. “Always remember, it’s what’s inside that counts” is one of his favorites from “Cinderella 2: Dreams Come True”.

I am not sure if he genuinely understands what that means, but he uses it often.

Last week at his Best Buddies end of season party,  the buddies were provided with unfinished wooden frames and a photo taken of them and their Buddy or in DC’s case,  Buddies – he has 3 (only two were in the photo, though). The activity was to decorate the frame, which I imagine was supposed to be a memento of their time together, this season.

Instead, Mr. Calendar, knowing that Mother’s Day is “what’s next”, turned that activity into a Mother’s Day gift. He just can not help himself.

His Buddies thinking that he would save it until Mother’s Day, were surprised that he gave it right to me, when I came to pick him up. Apparently they are not yet aware of DC’s inability to keep a secret so I explained that even if he thought to hide it until this week, I would hear about it and would probably be shown it every day until he officially gave it to me.

The assignment was: A letter to Santa

I got a love letter from my boy.

The assignment was: Decorate a frame as a memory of your Buddies.

I got a Mother’s Day gift from my boy.

Even when he gets the assignment wrong, he gets it right and I have no problem with that at all…

Happy Mother’s Day everyone!

This is the post that never ends….

and it goes on and on my friends…

flowers

Not really but if I continue to add to it every year it very well could be the post that never ends.

For a split second, I thought I had made the same mistake that I made last year in letting him make plans with his friends ahead of time not realizing that those plans fell on Mother’s Day. After frantically going through my texts, I realized that I had not. This year DC and I will get to spend all day together. He’s made his Mother’s Day plans; plans that are all about him. He views every holiday as an opportunity to go ‘out to eat’ so that is what we will do. I am sure that a trip to the bookstore is on his agenda as well. He likes to roll things out a little bit at a time.

I suppose technically Mother’s Day is all about him, right?

Even though the plans tend to favor him, he does understand that it is a little bit about me. He has made it a point to say “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom with my heart” numerous times every day since he realized that Mother’s Day was coming.

I am looking forward to the ‘secret’ hearts and flowers picture that he told me that that he is going to draw for me, going out to eat and even the trip to the bookstore because truth be told, there is nothing I would rather be doing then spending the day with my boy……..

Have a very Happy Mother’s Day!

Now, the rest of the post….

“Ooh, you’re a holiday… every day …such a holiday” – Happy Mother’s Day (2015)

“Now it’s my turn to say….. and I say you’re a holiday”

mother's day

The day before Mother’s Day 2014, I wrote a post about my obsession with a Macaroni necklace. I thought that it would be my post for Mother’s Day, but on the following day on Mother’s Day I just HAD to write an update.

Since I am still in awe about the ‘updated part’ and the progress my boy has made – I am re-posting both of those posts together today. I am blessed with this wonderful child and he is absolutely a holiday to me, every day…

DC is spending tomorrow with his friend BB at the circus. BB’s Mom bought the tickets ahead of time not realizing it was Mother’s Day and I said that he could go ahead of time, also not realizing it was Mother’s Day.

-insert sad face-

So we will be going out for Mother’s Day breakfast and apparently there is at least a card involved. Never able to keep a secret, DC, when he walked in the house on Thursday night made it a point to announce, more than once that he left Mom’s Mother’s Day card in the car. After breakfast DC will have a good time at the circus with his friend. I’m sure we will get to spend some time together later in the evening.

Wishing you all a very relaxing and happy Mother’s Day!

Mother’s Day and The Macaroni Necklace (2014)

Macaroni

My only Mother’s Day gift wish when DC was little was a macaroni necklace. You know, the macaroni necklace that every child makes for their mother eventually, for some occasion or holiday or for no reason at all. I think I remember making a few of my own when I was a kid. I really wanted a macaroni necklace! Unfortunately,  there was no one that was going to help him do this, with the exception of me, of course,  but that would not be the same. In other families if there was not another parent or sibling to make the suggestion and help with the project, eventually the child got old enough to come up with the idea as we all did when we were young, on his own. I knew that this was also something that was not going to happen in the foreseeable future, at least.

I know it was an odd thing to be fixated on, with so many other things to worry about, but it really made me sad that  my son was never going to make and present me with a macaroni necklace. I talked about it all of the time. Whenever my birthday or a holiday came around, my friends would have to listen to me whine about the fact that I would never have that cherished macaroni necklace. In my mind it was the “right of passage” of parenthood.

Now, yes of course I realize that this necklace that I wanted so badly was just a representation of the many ways our life was and would continue to be so very different from the way I had imagined when he was born.
I know that very few people end up with the life they imagine, but I knew ours would be very different.

DC was in school, but at this point in time, they really hadn’t done many of the “school gift” projects that most children come home with around the holidays ~ probably because the projects would not  make it home in one piece ~ therefore my hopes for a macaroni necklace were dwindling.

One day, the Friday before Mother’s Day, when DC was 6 or 7, I opened his back pack and found a package labeled “Mom”. I called DC over and asked if this was for me. He signed “Yes”.

I opened it and there it was,  a macaroni necklace! Made with HEART SHAPED macaroni, no less. Also included was a photo of DC and his aide stringing the pasta.

This was absolutely THE best Mother’s Day gift! Of course, he didn’t really understand that he had to give it to me, I had to find it in his back pack, and of course the writing wasn’t his, but there was photographic evidence that he had made it himself!

I wore it all day on Mother’s Day and  to work on the Monday after Mother’s Day. He seemed to be very pleased that I was wearing it!

My office mates were happy too, believe me….. I specifically remember one saying “Thank God you finally got that macaroni necklace, I was about to make one myself!”

Now-a days DC is no longer oblivious to holidays. He knows when they are coming, he knows what they are about for the most part. His mind still doesn’t go to “Hey let’s make Mom a card or a gift for Mother’s Day”, but he now has some help for that.  But he does remember to give them to me, usually early because he is too excited and can not wait. He does make the connection with the holiday and the gift and he is very, very proud of himself when he gives me a gift. Such a difference from the boy who didn’t know it was a holiday or to know that he should give me the gift he made at school sitting in his back-pack to the “man” who just can’t wait to make me happy with his gift!

There is nothing that makes me happier than seeing him proud of what he’s done and accomplished.

So, Happy Mother’s Day!

May your jewelry box runneth over with pasta and your day be filled with joy!

Mother’s Day update

DC loves to draw and he does draw quite a few pictures for me. His favorite subjects are flowers, cakes and once in a while,  pizza. He draws pictures for me for no reason at times but usually his “Flowers for Mom” drawings are reserved for the times he thinks he is in trouble and the times he IS in trouble. When you see “Flowers for Mom” pictures laying about when you walk into my house, chances are DC is in trouble for something. He never draws for a holiday or birthday, unless it is suggested to him.

Less than 12 hours after I wrote..

“His mind still doesn’t go to “Hey let’s make Mom a card or a gift for Mother’s Day”, DC woke up and the very first thing out of his mouth was, “Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!”.

We went to the kitchen and I started making coffee,  I turned around and there was DC at the table drawing.

He stopped when he saw me look at him as if I wasn’t supposed to see; “Sorry, Buddy, I won’t look”, and he continued on.

A few minutes later he presented me with this picture, with no prompting and no one to tell him it what a good idea it might be!

Happy Mother's Day!
